Postojna Caves

Following on from our Predjama Castle adventure, our guide then took us to the Postojna Caves. There are 1200 caves in Slovenia (just in case you're thinking enough with the caves) due to the karst rock formations - limestone caves (but no glowworms).

These must be one of the Natural Wonders of the World, if not the Universe etc etc. If not, I'd like to nominate them. The whole operation is incredibly slick and well organized. The guy who owns this beauty also owns Predjama Castle and has poured incredible funds into these sites to ensure that they are of international calibre.

First thing - if you are going to be visit, you need to be aware that inside the caves the temperature is a constant cheerful 9 degrees - so take some layers. The entrance into the caves is by way of Petit Train (yes Nanette)  - after 4 ks of train ride (and oh my, keep your head down if you are over 6 feet, and don't wave your arms around Italian Style as you speak - there are no cages or barriers to keep body parts intact.

It was like a fairy kingdom of stalactites and stalagmites - columns, organs, spaghetti  formations - a symphony room where concerts are held. We continued walking through the formations, marvelling at each new corner we rounded - beautifully lit pieces, some crystal white, some red tinged and some green tinged. The whole pathway is smooth concrete finished in non-slip paint finish - so wheelchairs and pushchairs are welcome. To be fair, some of the paths are so steep  as to make it difficult in a wheel chair or indeed just difficult for the old and infirmed, and the guide certainly kept a speedy march on through the caves. We descended to 120 meters below ground level - phenomenal, and I only thought about earthquakes twice.

Rather than waxing lyrical any further, here is a gallery of shots - bearing in mind that these shots were all taken without a flash - we were given dire warnings about photography with flashes and I didn't want to be That Person.
