Bikies

The maths was not in our favour - to hire a car was 500 kuna, but to hire 4 scooters was 800 kuna. Logic and finance versus experiencec - I love travelling on scooters.

Today's izlet is to the town of Hvar (on the Island of Hvar). About 20 ks away but involving a tunel - fortunately we were warned.

Weird how cold it was traveling through it, not surprisingly quite dark given that none of us thought to stop and take our sunglasses off!

And then a long and winding road down to Hvar with cars and buses racing past us - on a good downward slope we can top 50ks.

Hvar is different from our lovely little Stari Grad - it is packed with tourists, ferries arriving with new crowds, people touting water taxis, and lots of upmarket boats. This is where the rich and famous come.

High above the village is the fortress,  with pinkfaced sweaty people walking the myriad steps to reach the walls. Others sitting in bars away from the heat. I skirted the shadowed side of the square, took a few photos, and then sat on the grass under a tree and watched the people.

We wended our way back to the little swimming spot below where we parked the scooters (this is a pedestrian only town) and lay in the sun for a while, discussing the merits of sand versus stones on a good beach. Or even a bad one. I'm seeing the merits of no sand.

Back on the scooters, stopped at the start of the tunel to remove sunglasses, back to Stari Grad and pinched ourselves at just how lovely it is.

Tonight town was full of people from the sailing fraternity - staff, sailors, travellers. Everyone ambles on the riva, and then gathers in the bars for a drink or a meal. We eat in a konbar on the edge of the square with the promise of music and dancing, and enter into a lively discussion on poverty in NZ. Didn't really find a solution but decided that to judge, one needs to walk a mile in peoples shoes. or two miles.

The band was loud, bouncing off the stone walls of the konobar so we bought a bottle of orahovac and sat in our little courtyard. Life is good - we are incredibly lucky.
