OTOK VIS
The ferry ride was great - a father and adult daughter joined me and I was forced to speak Croatian given that he didn't speak English, although she spoke German, French, Italian, Spanish...*sigh* - European living, so much easier when you can visit places for a weekend and practice your language skills. She is nearly qualified as a pharmacist, but didn't get vaccinated because she believes there is something in the vaccinations (magnets?) but did manage to obtain false vaccination certificates for her family... mmmm
Vis is quiet, sleepy, although filled with roaming groups of young Australians passing through on Sail Croatia or the more mature Jadroljina tour boats. I'm not sure why they always seem to be yelling loudly and swearing. The locals seem impressed (not). The port is packed boat to boat with yachts. People in the street either look like crew from the boats or sailing on the boats. I went out at 7 am this morning and it was just the locals getting to Studena (supermarket) before the heat of the day.
Here are some photos so far of the streets around Vis. It's pretty, understated, little back streets built for the shade, winding behind the ancient houses.
My accomodation is a bit like a cave - the photos on Booking.Com made it look like a small unit - 1 brm, bathroom. In fact it is one bedroom with no window, a bathroom which floods - there is nowhere to sit although there are two folding chairs (but no space to fold them out to sit on them). I've just looked to find somewhere else to move to, perhaps a bigger cave.
But for now, i'm heading off to pick up the scooter I rented yesterday to explore the rest of the island. There is a nice breeze blowing, I've lathered up the winter skin with sun block. The winter feet in summer shoes have a few blisters but nothing to slow me down.
Ok, gotta get out of the cave...
