Bordeaux Catchup

Good morning, its Sunday morning, 8:30, and the town is just waking up. My hotel is in the perfect place, looking straight down the most expensive shopping street in old Bordeaux! And here's a thing - I haven't even been tempted to step into YSL or any of the other branded shop fronts.

It's been a bit of a whirlwind getting here - the flight to Dubai was fine (I mean, what can I say - its just over 16 hours in the air). I watched some good movies, had a pretty good sleep  - and all in all, by the time I reached Nice, felt like one of those ducks being raised for fois gras - those lovely flight attendants just keep forcing food into us,  just to pass the time.

The Radison Park Inn is a handy place to stay, but its pretty tired. Now that I'm in my room in Bordeaux though, I appreciate the size of the Radison room - I'm getting good at manoeuvring my way around this nun's cell of a room. Honestly, if i was a few kilos bigger it would be difficult to take a shower.  Definitely a single room with a single bed. Never have I been so aware of how single my life is...  but the view, and the position... oh and there is a lift (which sometimes in french hotels, there isn't).

I arrived at 8:30 am after a very early Easy Jet flight - and threw myself in to a walking tour. Best way to get the feel of a new city by doing a free walking tour.  We walked for a couple of hours, listened to a bit of history - it's all a lovely tasting plate that allows a bit of orientation and gives you some ideas of places to go back to later. Which of course I did - although by three,
having only had pain au chocolat and coffee in a take out cup at 5:30, I was beginning to lose the will to live...Pauls sell rolls with ham and cheese - it hit the spot for the first few bites.

Coffee - had my first one when  i dumped my bags at the hotel. NZ does great coffee.

The town is pretty amazing - on an easy to get lost grid of streets that make total sense until the side alleys lead off and then curve around...  I love getting lost in these little streets. Yesterday i walked into an amazing little Moroccan store . I'd love to fill my bag up but its only day three and my bag is heavy...

So now i'm off for a wander in the empty paved streets. I'll come back with a few photos and stories.

  1. I have a vague memory of booking my bike and day trips at a tourist bureau in a central square next to a big wine centre. I avoided the wine centre having already exhausted its delights on a previous accompanied trip! Shame you can't get a bike - it is all so flat! Did you go to the Bordeau market down by the lake. The most amazing macarons. Love your blog - great start to the day!
